While selecting a costumes for kids, take into account your child’s preferences. Choose such type of costume which your child is comfortable wearing it. He/she should be comfortable walking up and down the streets.. If he/she hates wearing hats, don’t choose a costume which has a hat. Some youngsters have sensitive skin and cannot tolerate itches, so the best thing would be to avoid scratchy fabrics or costumes with Velcro closures.

While choosing a kids costume, remember two things in mind; your child’s preferences and your budget. Most of the children want to dress up as doctors, pirates, nurses, fireman, policemen, astronauts, animals etc. Choose a costume for your kid which your child likes and also fits in your budget.

Find out whether you want to buy or rent the costume. If you’re talented you can stitch your costume. You can find different costume patterns from a fabric store or online. If you’re creative you can make a beautiful costume from basic stuff like t-shirt and other items.

Child safety should be given utmost importance while buying a costume. If the costume requires a mask, see to it that the kid can see clearly through the eyeholes of the mask and it is not too tight. See to it that your shoes are properly tied and fitted so that your child does not fall.

Halloween Party Games

Halloween Party Games for Kids, Teens and Adults

Halloween party games are often the life and soul of a Halloween party. Here are a few ideas for Halloween party games for kids, teens and adults.

Halloween Party Games for Kids, Teens and Adults

With Halloween just a few days away, everybody’s getting into that special Halloween party mood. And what’s a Halloween party without a few creepy and fun games? Here are a few ideas for Halloween party games for kids, teens, and adults, which are sure to be a hit.

Halloween Party Games for Kid

This is the age group that is easiest to please. Kids love to get into the spirit of Halloween with gusto. Although, if they are too young, care must be taken not to make the games too scary.

Eyeball Relay Race: The children should be divided into teams. The first child of each team should be given a spoon along with a ping-pong ball painted to look like an eyeball. The eyeball should be carried on the spoon, and they have to carry this to the end of a course and return, and hand the spoon and eyeball over to the next child. This has to be continued until every child in each team has had a turn. The team that is done first wins.

Ghostly Waiter: The children are divided into teams. The first child of each team is given a paper plate and balloon. The balloon must be balanced on the plate as each child walks as fast as he/she can up and down a set course. The team that finishes first is the winner.

Guess the Scarecrow’s Nose: A sheet with a scarecrow painted on it will have to be made before the party, keeping in mind the general height of the children participating in the game. Cut out the nose area of the scarecrow. The children should be divided into two teams. One team should be taken out of the room, while the other team stays inside. The adults should hold the sheet up at the doorway. Then each child from the team outside puts her/his nose through the hole in the sheet, while the children inside the room try and guess who the scarecrow’s nose is.

Halloween Freeze Tag: All the players should be in Halloween costumes. The player who becomes it must chase the others, trying to touch them. Each time he/she touches a player, that player has to freeze up, i.e. stand still, until somebody unfreezes them. In order to unfreeze a frozen player, somebody must come up close to the frozen player and guess out aloud what the costume he or she has on. If they don’t get the guess right in three tries, they must go away and try unfreezing somebody else. The player who is it can freeze the player trying to unfreeze somebody.

    Halloween Party Games for Teens

Most teens are at a stage in their lives when they feel silly playing what they consider kiddies’ games. All they want is some music, good food, and a place to hang out and do their teen thing. And most dislike parental or adult supervision. However, there are a few challenging games that should get even the most jaded teen asking for more. Try some scary halloween games, It’s a good idea to simply suggest the ideas, and leave it to the teens to manage the Halloween party games themselves. As for the supervision, looking in discreetly once in a while, just to keep a check on things, is more than enough.

Dancing Competition: Most teens will find this really fun. There can be various wacky categories, such as ballroom, tango, break dance, and so on. Perhaps they can pair up with each other according to the costume they are wearing. The more bizarre the pairing the better. A popular vote or a panel can decide on the winners. Prizes like CDs or gift vouchers can be given to the winners.

Halloween Haunted House: This is a hit with practically every age group. Begin making the haunted house before the Halloween party day. One of the best places of setting up a haunted house is in the basement. Black garbage bags can be used to make the rooms and walls of the haunt. Be creative! The older siblings of the teens along with their friends can be invited over to run the haunt. Have appropriately scary music.

Most Monstrous Makeover: The players can be divided into groups of two, three or four players. A bag of assorted items such as false eyelashes, makeup boxes, lipstick, false noses, wigs, and so on should be given to each team. Each team will choose a member of their team to make up. Each team should be given about 5-10 minutes to turn the person they are making over into a monstrous looking creature. The host decides on the winner.

      Adult Halloween Party Games

Most adults find the child in themselves every year when Halloween turns up. They get into the spirit of the haunting season with as much gusto as kids. Here are a few fun games that most adults will enjoy.

Halloween Still Scene: The objective in this game is to use props like scary mannequins, fake blood, swords, knives, old clothes, costumes and so on to create a scary scene. The props can be bought from a thrift store. The legs, arms and head of the mannequins can be pulled off. This game can be played in the backyard where a box of the props can be placed. The guests must be divided into teams. And each team must use the props to create the scariest scene possible within a certain period of time. Prizes can be given to the scene adjudged the scariest.

Halloween Killing Instincts: This is a hide and seek game with a difference. The guests have about 3-5 minutes to hide wherever they can. The one chosen as the "murderer" must go to another room while the rest of the players hide and put on a ghoulish Halloween costume. The lights should be turned off and only have a couple of flashlights or so. The "murderer" then hunts out his/her "victims", and each time a victim is caught/killed, he/she must let out a blood-curdling scream and go to the center of a room, designated as a the cemetery, and lie on the floor. Whoever is left last is declared the winner. This can be great fun especially with scary music on.

Halloween Battle of the Balloons: The guests should be divided into groups. Black and orange colored balloons should be tied to each player’s ankles. On the word "go" each team should try and burst the balloons of the other team. As each person’s balloon is burst, he/she withdraws from the game. The team that has the last balloon left is declared the winner. Yes, it sounds childish, but most adults find it great fun just because of that. In fact, it can be a riot.

Halloween Costumes For Kids And Adults

        • August 20, 2009 11:13 am

Five Great Halloween Costumes For Kids And Adults

Halloween is a time for ghosts, goblins, witches, and things that go bump in the night. It is also a time for faeries, princes, ballerinas, and the magic of childhood. But Halloween does not have to be a holiday simply for children. Whether you are living it up at a Halloween party, throwing one of your own, or dressing up the kids and taking them on a trick-or-treat excursion, Halloween is yours to enjoy as well.

The best way to enjoy Halloween is to engage in the festivities of the season. Carve a pumpkin. Watch scary movies. Eat lots of candy. And by all means, dress up for the occasion. Finding that perfect costume idea is a daunting task, but only because there are so many choices. If you are in the market for adult Halloween costumes or kids Halloween costumes, keep these suggestions in mind:

          The Wolf Man.

Wolf man deluxe adultThis costume idea is a great one for both kids and adults. It invokes the rambunctious spirit of the holiday with images of a full moon and the dense, mysterious haze of fog on the English moors. Popularized by the classic Universal horror film, and the upcoming remake, this is one creature, which has endured in popular culture as one of the quintessential movie monsters. Nothing illustrates the holiday better than this costume homage to one of the Greats.

          The Convict.

Convict AdultAs far as adult Halloween costumes go, this is a great one for men or women and calls on the spirit of the fast-paced, freewheeling "public enemy" days of the 1930’s. With the traditional pinstripe look, this costume makes the old black-and-white fashionable and festive. This is a terrific idea for couples, as it is reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde and other ill-fated, star-crossed romances, and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser at parties.

          Flower Children.

Flower Child Another great in the pantheon of adult Halloween costumes, this idea will take you and your guests on a trip back in time to the days of love and music. Bring Woodstock back to life with flare pants, blouse, waist sash, glasses and retro-jewelry for a far-out look. These psychedelic looks are so versatile you could theme a whole party in them, and get by with some help from your friends.

         The Cheerleader.

Varsity Cheerleader Sexy Adult While this look works for adults, it is adorable when used for kids Halloween costumes. Imagine your little girl in a skirt and pom-poms! You could dress her up with the red, white, and blue, look, or perhaps opt for one of your favorite sports teams. She will win the hear 1000 ts of every house you visit with a smile and a cheer. The only problem? All that extra candy she will be getting as a result of her team spirit.

          The Superhero.

Spiderman Child Boys and girls alike will love these cute kids Halloween costumes. From Hawkgirl to Wonder Woman and Batman to Superman, the Superhero look has something that will appeal to both genders. Kids love to dress up as their favorite heroes, and going this route will truly excite them into a frenzy that may just make Halloween their favorite holiday for some time to come!

Do not let Halloween pass without finding the perfect costume for you and your kids. With so many to choose from, the only difficulty comes in narrowing down your options. Whatever you decide, have a happy and safe holiday!

        Halloween History and Traditions

        • August 10, 2009 12:55 pm

October 31st is the last day on the Celtic calendar, it was a pagan holiday for honouring the dead. Sometimes reffered to as All Hallows Eve it dates back some 2000 years.

All Hallows Eve is the evening before All Saints Day, the day that Christians used to convert pagans, celebrated on November 1st.

November 1st is also the day that the Catholic Church honours All Saints.

It was widely believed by Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe, that the souls of the dead roamed the streets at night, and since all were not thought to be friendly spirits, they left gifts and treats out to appease the evil ones so as to ensure a plentiful harvest the following year.

Hence we have Trick or Treat at Halloween.

No matter how old you are, the 31st of October is always the day. to look forward to every year to celebrate Halloween. Halloween means children running around in costumes, and friends and family all getting together and a chance talk with their neighbours. When else do you have an excuse to eat all the sweets you want and to wear whatever outrageous costume you want? But Halloween wasn’t always like it is today. In fact, Halloween dates back thousands of years to an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, pronounced / s w n/, / sa . n/, or / sa n/ in English .

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in what we know as the present day United Kingdom, Ireland and northern France, celebrated Samhain as the new year on November 1,because it was at this time of the year that was the end of summer and the harvest period and the start of the winter, which in this region of the world is a cold and dark time. They associated the winter season with death and it was widely believed that on the night before the festival of Samhain the difference between the living and the dead was distorted.

The night of October 31 was when ghosts of the dead where believed to return to earth causing trouble and damaging the food stored after the harvest. Druids the Celtic priests thought it was the best time to make predictions about the future during this period, the prophecies made by the Druids were an important source of comfort for the long, dark winter months ahead.

The Celts observed the event by sacrificing animals in bonfires built by the Druids,to appease the Gods, and when the celebration was over, they lit their hearth fires from the sacred bonfire for protection during the Winter months.

When the Romans conquered the territory occupied by the Celts and ruled over it for 400 years, over the course of time, some Roman festivals were combined with Samhain. One was a day in late October when the Romans celebrated the passing of the dead, and was called Feralia,. The second honoured the Roman Goddess of fruit and trees, Pomona, her symbol the apple and was incorporated into the celebration of Samhain. This could possibly explains the modern day tradition of bobbing for apples, played on Halloween.

About the year 800, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 as All Saint’s Day, a time to honour saints and martyrs. It is believed that the pope was trying to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a Christian holiday. The festival was also known as All-hallows or All-Hallowmas, the Middle English for All Saints’ Day. Soon, the night before it came to be called All-hallows Eve and then eventually, Halloween. About the year 1000, the Christian church made November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day for to honouring the dead, and it was celebrated like Samhain, with bonfires, parades and costumes like angels, saints and devils. The three celebrations became known as Hallowmas.

Halloween customs eventually spread to America as European immigrants came to America. It was in the second half of the 1800s that Halloween was popularized nationally, mainly by Irish immigrants fleeing their country’s potato famine. Neighbours would share stories of their deceased, tell fortunes, dance and sing, in colonial Halloween, the celebrations featured ghost stories and mischief, but Halloween had not reached the entire country.

Americans began to wear costumes and go from door-to-door asking for food or money, a practice now known as trick-or-treating. At this time, young women believed they could prophesize their future husband’s appearance by doing tricks with yarn and mirrors. By the late 1800s, Americans tried to make Halloween more about community than about ghosts, tricks and witchcraft, by having parties for adults and children, and as a result, the holiday has lost most of its superstitious and religious ties.

In the 20s and 30s, Halloween became entirely community-centred with whole towns having parades and parties. Vandals also began to use Halloween celebrations as an excuse to cause trouble, then that started to decline in the 1950s and Halloween began to focus on the young. Trick-or-treating was started up again as a wat to celebrate Halloween and a new American tradition was born, to become the countries second largest commercial holiday. It is said that today Americans spend an estimated $6.9 billion annually on Halloween.

The common tradition of dressing up in halloween costumes, has European and Celtic roots, they believed that they could trick the ghosts that came out during Samhain by wearing masks, and then they would put food outside their homes for the ghosts so that they would not enter the home and spoil their food supply, which is probably where trick-or-treating originated.

Another tradition that has come from the Celts – is the making of lanterns by hollowing out Pumpkins, only they used turnips instead of pumpkins. The story has it that a notorious drunk and practical joker named Jack, tricked the devil into climbing into a tree. He then trapped the devil in the highest branches of the tree by carving an image of a cross into the trunk, Jack promised to let him down if the devil never tempted him again, the devil said that he would never tempt Jack again. Legend says that when Jack died he was not allowed into heaven because of his evil past. Jack was also not allowed into hell because of the trick he played on the devil. Instead, Jack got from the devil a single ember so he could light his way through the cold, dark winter. To keep the ember lit for longer Jack placed the light into a hallowed-out turnip. Nowadays pumpkins are used as they are a lot more plentiful, making the pumpkin the official Jack-o-lantern.

Halloween is one of the oldest holiday festivals and second only to Christmas in popularity. Millions celebrate the Halloween each year without knowing any of its origins. Some view Halloween as a time for friends and family, while others still see it as superstitious in nature, with its ties to the souls of the dead returning to cause mischief and mayhem. Some religions even regard it as an unholy holiday. But whatever your viewpoint, you can’t deny the story of Halloween is a fascinating one

All Saints, All Souls and Halloween

        • August 9, 2009 2:02 pm

Festival of Samhain, All Saints, All Souls and Halloween

At the end of Autumn and as the Winter darkness looms, the souls of the dead and the spirits of saints are celebrated in three festivals, Halloween, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Together these three festival days are known as Hallowmas, and they are celebrated on October 31st, November 1st and November 2nd.

All over the World people believe that  the dead have souls  that live on and that these become more active at Halloween and All Souls Day.

Halloween was an old Anglo Saxon and Celtic festival and marked the start of the Celtic new year The Celtic celebration was known as Samhain or Samain. Samhain was the Celtic Lord of the Dead.

During the festival, Samhain made his judgement over all the dead souls, so gifts were offered to him in the hope that he might judge the dead souls kindly and let them go home for the night.

Not all of the spirits were kindly spirits, some ghosts and demons would rise up from the dead on this day to create mayhem and turmoil, running around making mischief.

The Celts kept the spirits happy with fires, feasts, dancing, and offering gifts. Ghost Adult MaskIn order to trick the malevolent spirits people wore   ghostly masks  , making the naughty spirits think that they were also spirits. The people wearing the masks would then lead the malevolent ghosts and demons to the outskirts of the town or village where they could do no harm.

Today this practice takes the form of what we know as Trick or Treating, especially in America where both young and old go about dressed in spooky costumes and masks, asking for Treats with the threat of some sort of mischief or Trick if a treat is not given, usually these days the treat is in the form of sweets or candy.

The modern day Trick or Treater can be dressed as almost anything, some still dress as witches or demons of some sort, but others dress as fictional or cartoon characters. In fact anything goes.

During my researching I have come across some suggestions for Halloween night:-

        1. If treats are not given then when they close the door, you take something from their front garden and leave it in a garden further down the road.

        2. A good trick or treater always carries extra masks, so if they find an over generous house they can change masks and go back over and over again.

        3. Check the phone book for the homes of Doctors and Lawyers in the area, because the more they earn the bigger and better the treat might be. Be warned, avoid the houses of Dentists because they will only give you a lecture about how all the sweets and candy is bad for your teeth.

Although I have shown you some of the things I came across during my research this does not mean that I encourage you to do the same.
